Social Life In The New River Valley
I’ve blogged before about why I believe it’s difficult to keep great people in Southwest Virginia. One of the reasons I believe it’s a challenge is because the social scene isn’t as great for young people outside of college as it is in other parts of the country. That is something we just cannot deny. While I can’t imagine a more fun place to go to school than Virginia Tech, once you graduate, the social scene becomes pretty fragmented.
I guess others are starting to realize this too. Earlier this year, I interviewed with Angela Manese-Lee at The Roanoke Times about this very topic. Her article, “Singles Seen?” was published today and she hits the nail on the head, with lots of great sources as a part of her story. Go here if you’d like to check it out.
Now don’t get me wrong. I love Blacksburg and I think it’s a great place to live, work, and run a business. We could relocate our business if we wanted to, but the thought doesn’t ever cross my mind. We’re an up and coming town and it won’t be long before we reach a tipping point, like many other smaller, young towns and cities have. This place has a lot going for it and I hope to be able to play my part in helping it continue to progress. On that note, we’re having a New River Network Professional Mixer tonight from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. (or whenever people decide to leave) at the Burress Tavern in Downtown Blacksburg.
